The concept of a logo, symbol, or mark have been around long before they were found on your favorite brands today.
Ancient cultures and civilizations used “marks or symbols” to claim ownership. Didn’t Christopher Columbus claim The New World by placing flag in the soil? Fact or fiction is of little importance, but what does matter is the concept and the suggested act.
Dating back to early civilized cultures, bricks were stamped to designate specific construction sites. And while Rome was not built in a day, Roman bricks were marked to identify the place of origin and possibly to identify the maker or craftsman.
Housewares, decorative pieces, statues, and weapons were marked to identify the maker, craftsman, or artisan. Cultures found value in this form of adornment, and quite likely the moment a product became just that — a brand.
